Internship is Now a Path to Licensure in Florida

The close of Florida's 2016 legislative session resulted in the creation of the Construction Industry Workforce Taskforce. After months of work by the dedicated individuals on that taskforce, including a BOAF representative, BOAF sponsored House Bill 1021. HB 1021 introduced a seventh path to licensure for inspectors and plans examiners, and was signed into law at the close of 2017's legislative session. In February 2018, new BCAIB rules concerning Provisional Certificates and Internship Training Programs were implemented. You may  access the rules at Florida’s Administrative Code website.

BOAF has received approval for a Building Course that meets the 40-hour trade-specific course requirement. Courses for Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical will soon follow. These BOAF courses may be included in local jurisdiction internship programs. The courses will be taught by BOAF instructors at scheduled locations during the year, including the BOAF Headquarters in Sanford.

BOAF will plan to present a model internship program to BCAIB that may be used by local jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction will be responsible for seeking approval and administering their own intern training programs.

The opportunity to conduct a local intern training program will help to solve the staffing shortage that so many building offices across Florida suffer from. We encourage you to consider internship a staffing solution for your jurisdiction.

There are many components to successfully navigating a candidate through a local internship program. To help guide you through this process, BOAF has created an Internship FAQs page. If you find you still have questions or concerns, please contact us or DBPR's Building Code Administrators & Inspectors Board

BOAF will continue to offer the Cross Training Program for those individuals that currently hold a standard license and are seeking additional licensure.
